Kid’s Eats: Candy Sushi

I’m not the most ‘kid’ creative person in the world and often come up short when thinking of ideas on how to keep my little monsters entertained.  No longer can I get away with calling our numerous trips to the grocery store an ‘adventure’ and we can only go to the neighborhood park so many times before we all (well, mainly me) want to shoot ourselves.  So, when I ran across this candy sushi idea from Mommyknows, I immediately set this plan into action.  The kids absolutely loved it.  One note, be prepared for a sugar meltdown followed by a possible napless afternoon but watching them make their ‘sushi’ creations was worth it.

I used the original recipe to make up a batch of Rice Krispie squares. Definitely add a few extra marshmallows to the recipe to make sure they don’t turn out too crispy.


Once they have cooled, trim up the slab of Rice Krispie treats into a neat rectangle and put on wax paper.


Add candy. Twizzlers, gummi worms, jujube fish and fruit roll-ups work great but get as creative as you want.  Just stick to the gummier candies.


Roll treats tightly and trim excess with sharp knife.


Once you’ve trimmed the roll, wrap the fruit roll up around it and squeeze. Leaving the plastic wrap on makes it less sticky to roll but just make sure to remove plastic wrap before cutting.  Mommy did the cutting because she is a bit of a control freak.


So colorful and crazy sweet.


Unfortunately, our candy sushi did not make it to the above  ’presentation’ level but was thoroughly enjoyed by all, including our dog, Maddie.

    AHHHHH!!! Love these so much!! My 3 year old loves sushi and I can’t wait to make these with him:) If I hadn’t promised him we were making Whoopie Pies tonight, we’d be making those. Sooooo clever…Thank you for the idea. Brilliant!!

    Man, these monstrosities are 100% sugar. Do you really think it’s a good idea to feeding your babies all that candy. In fact, should you yourself be eating that crap? Why not expose them to the real Japanese culture and make real sushi instead. It tastes better and is way better for you.

      A Couple of ways to lighten the sugar load. Use Real Dehydrated fruit instead of fruit roll ups then use Brown rice puffs instead of white and finally get the sugar free versions of the candies that you put inside. However I found painting marshmallows with Wilton’s cake die to work really well to make a faux shrimp and a salmon. I do agree that regular sushi is awesome, but sometimes getting a craft together is just more rewarding.

      Kill joy -.- I wouldn’t make this a nightly thing, or even more than a once in a blue moon. That stated, this blog is about sharing things that the author has discovered, not bringing her down because she actually lets her kid eat sugar.

      Ok, I get that you’re “concerned” about the sugar, but really I can not stand people like this, if you made these for a fun party treat, or a rainy day thing it would be perfectly fine. Also, this can be an introduction into sushi, while making it, you could explain how other cultures eat food that looks exactly like this only it’s made with things like fish, rice, sea weed, and other sushi ingredients; and go into how you and your family should and *will* try it. Don’t be so high and mighty about the culture thing, you sound arrogant, you’ve turned a cute and fun recipe into something that sounds bad and awful. You have to remember, I ate fruit roll ups, and rice crispy treats as a kid, and I had parents who taught me that exercising was good for you, and I played sports so I am a healthy individual, and if you try that you’re children will be fine and can try recipes like this, kids need things like this once in a while.

    My friends will love this. So creative.

    Also–Who cares if they’re “100% sugar”? Live a little. Plus, it’s not like one person is eating all of them…

    I’d love to see much more creative ideas to share.

    I think this is a terrific idea, and I am so glad I “stumbled” upon it. It looks like great fun to have with my kids, who are 10, 13 and 16.
    Anything creative, fun and keeping them busy is a plus in my book, even if it does include some sugar. They won’t eat all of it, and it won’t be often, but it will be loads of fun!!

    I don’t know if you’re open to a really healthy “sushi” idea, but how about you take a whole grain tortilla, spread peanut butter on it, top with Crofter Superfruit Spread Asia, roll up and cut into “sushi” size bites. Looks good, tastes even better, my kids love it.

      Hi Gabi! I actually did another post on ‘Frushi” where we combined much healthier ingredients into sushi bites. But the Candy Sushi was a real treat for the kiddos because they are never exposed to this much sugar at one time. i have to say it was fun and delicious for me too!

    I made these for my birthday instead of cake! Super fun and a huge hit with my friends (we are all high school age) and had lots of fun trying to pick them up with chopsticks!

    I made these wonderful treats today, and had quite a lot of trouble getting the fruit roll-ups to unwrap without tearing or sticking together. I quickly discovered that the trick is to put them in the fridge for a minute or so and then they will unravel much easier!

    We did this for my sons birthday party, only I had plates with different candies so each kid could make their own, HUGE hit!
